DANS LITTLE LADY

(Dans Cross x Leos Lady 81)

April 15, 1978 - September 8, 2005

Nearly every little girl dreams of owning a horse.  I was fortunate enough that my parents had many horses while I was growing up but none of them were truly mine.  One early April morning in 1978 I awoke to find we had a new foal born.  I don't know exactly why but I felt a connection to that spindly legged sorrel filly and knew she had to be with me always.

This is me and my brother with Lady -April 1978

When Lady was two she was sent to a trainer for 30 days and after that I started riding her.  I was 12 and had only ridden well broke horses and ponies, but Lady and I learned together.   It takes a pretty special horse to be a good mount after only 30 days for a 12 year old with no training experience.  For the next two years we trail rode almost every day and also raced nearly every horse in the neighborhood.  Lady always won, the only neighborhood horse that was faster was Scooter her big brother.  My family was into barrel racing and speed was what the horses were bred for.  Lady's pedigree goes back to some of great old speed horses including Chicaro Bill, Grey Badger, and Leo, not to mention a high percentage of Thoroughbred stakes winners.  When she was 4 she went back to a trainer for 30 days to get started on barrels.  After that I started showing her at local shows and in 4-H where we did very well.  Unfortunately at this time my parents got divorced and the horse showing stopped.  Lady was my friend and confidant who helped me through those troubled times.  I rode her almost every day in the summer and after school, we had some great adventures together.  Sometimes I just don't know how I could have made it through those years without my best friend Lady.

Brittany Kron and Lady - August 2000

Up until the age of 23 Lady still showed a great desire to run barrels, successfully competing and carrying my friends 11 year old daughter Brittany.  Brittany has moved on to a younger faster mount but Lady was the perfect teacher because she had get up and go when she needed it and knew the pattern by heart, then she would come out of the ring and fall asleep until her next class!

Lady - Summer 1995

Surprisingly, with her speed background Lady has produced some very nice pleasure offspring.  I always wanted to breed Lady to a top pleasure sire to see what she would produce.  I finally got the opportunity to breed her to the great Investment Asset.

In 2003 she had a cute brown colt that was nicknamed Ozzie.  He had the cutest little ears that curled in at the tips and a funny little whinny that always sounded like he was loosing his voice.

I started riding him in 2005 and he was everything I could hope for in a pleasure prospect.  Trainable and willing with tons of natural talent. I felt he would be the Superstar I had always hoped for!

February 23, 2003 - September 12, 2005

Very sadly I lost both Lady and Ozzie in Sept 2005.  Ozzie became ill with Potomac Horse fever and foundered badly.  He and I fought for his life for 6 weeks and we finally had to give up on September 12, 2005.  Just 4 days before that Lady developed severe colic and had to euthanized September 8, 2005.  I just cant help but wonder if there was some reason Lady needed to be waiting in heaven for Ozzie.  She was never sick a day in her life and to suddenly get such a severe colic just as Ozzie was loosing his battle makes me wonder.  I pray they are both healthy and sound running in green pastures and waiting for me up there.

Every person should hope to own at least one 'Lady' in their lifetime.
